Thank you everyone for your concern and messages you sent after the disaster on March 11. The Tokyofoodcast duo are resuming our regular life in Tokyo where the city has fully recovered and returned to the normal affairs with vibrant energy. And, of course, our passion for sake and food has not changed.

We will continue to share our sake, food, and travel experiences with some updates from our life in Japan.

To kickstart the return of our long lost Tokyofoodcast site, I thought to share this short video about miracle sake we tasted at John Gauntner and Robert Yellin’s seminar at the end of April. This sake brewed by Hitakami in Ishinomaki was left in the tank untouched for two weeks after the disaster. Visit John’s site for the whole story (Scroll down to entries for April 7 and 13).

Anybody else going to be in Honolulu
next week?

I like going to Hawaii. I enjoy sampling from several hundred delicious sake. I also don’t mind trying a few special dishes paired with these sake by some very fine restaurants. I think this will be quite a lot of fun. [Please note how hard I am working to keep a calm, refined, understated tone.] W00t! We’re going to Joy of Sake! In Hawaii! [Damn. Lost control for a minute there. Won't let it happen again.]

At last check, the restaurants for 2010 still weren’t up on the website, but the food listings for 2009 are already making me hungry. There is still time to buy tickets online but don’t wait until the last minute. Or, if you don’t want to buy tickets for JoS online, you can get them at The Sake Shop.

And speaking of The Sake Shop, while we’re in Hawaii I’m also looking forward to getting a chance to visit and meet Malcolm and Nadine too. Their shop looks great and they always announce plenty of tastings and specials on Twitter.

Drop us a line if you’re going to be there. If they have wifi at the event, we’ll try to tweet as much as we can. Details below.

mame gohan in May

The other day, I was going through my pictures from May to finally organize them on my computer. As I was clicking through the pictures from dinner at Kishiyoshi in Higashi Nakano, I paused at this picture and just sighed to let all the tension out.

Many thoughts crossed my mind looking at this picture of the simplest of meals. “It’s already past May, past fresh green pea season and I had only one mame gohan!” I thought. Then, I smelled the aroma of just-cooked rice with the distinct fresh greenness. Slight saltiness mixed with nut-like fresh pea and sweetness of rice filled my mouth. My mind, then, wondered off thinking of the daily green pea gohan in early summers at home and my chores of shelling peas as a kid.

I just cannot believe it’s rainy season already and Tokyofoodcast has been dormant for a long time, since April. In case you are wondering what happened to us, we are here and our passion for sake and food are here, too. We were a bit overwhelmed by some new projects. We are back, well, almost back!

If you look very closely at the photo on the cover of the March issue of Dancyu, you’ll see Et-chan. She also appears inside in a photo from a story on Nihonshu no Hi. She’s been busy.

Even better, Dancyu created an in-store display banner for this special nihonshu issue. Apologies for the scan, but here it is.

Time for a break!

When we complete our latest round of travel, work, and sake geekery, we’ll return with a new crop of weekly nihonshu write-ups. In the meantime, I see nine new bottles cooling in our genkan and more coming in soon. Whew!

Until we get back on schedule, check out these pics below of Et-chan in action at Shichiken last weekend.

Tokyofoodcast will be on a short summer break, but SOTW will resume in September. In the meantime, I thought to try a bit of SOTW trivia.

Last week marked Tokyofoodcast’s twenty-first Sake of the Week. We kicked-off the series back in March thinking that it was a good way to keep track of the sake we were tasting. Also, it gave us a somewhat structured schedule of making a sake-related post each weekend or at the latest, on Monday.

The selection process is totally random. At the end of each week, we usually look back and talk what made an impact on us. Sometimes, we both agree on what would be the post. At other times, it’s totally based on just Te-chan’s or my own opinion. Anyway, we really enjoy looking back the week and pondering good sake and food we enjoyed.

Tokyofoodcast will be on a short summer break, but SOTW will resume in September. In the meantime, I thought to leave you with a bit of SOTW trivia.

Kamokinshu at Buchi

Question: What are the top three SOTW based on the number of hits up to now?
Answer:
1. Sake of the week #010: Kamokinshū Junmai Ginjo
2. Sake of the week #014: Yamatogawa
3. Sake of the week #01: Yokuyo Seishu

If you missed any, you can find all our other SOTW posts here on Tokyofoodcast.

Hope you have a great rest of the Summer! See you all back here soon!

Et-chan and Te-chan
