I finally got to Nisshin after living very close to this store for 3 years. I remember I saw a newspaper ad once, but I had not come across this store before. Finally I did, especially after 3 years searching for parsnips! This is the first place I would look if I were looking for specialty items or vegetables. I ordered Turkey for Thanksgiving over the phone and it sounds like they even thaw the turkey for you. If you do not have time to thaw, this service should come in handy.
Items to look for:
- Variety of ham, cheese, meat& cuts, vegetables
- Only frozen seafood, not big seafood selection
- Examples of vegetables available here in October are: parsnips, rhubarbs, beets, rutabagas, celery roots, Habaneros,Artichokes, Fennel, herbs, Asian vegetables, Portabella Mushrooms, Chanterelle Mushrooms, cheap(for Japan) limes etc
- Venison, kangaroo and various meat cuts
- Fresh pasta
- Cheese section is quite big with seven kinds of Mozzarella
I bought an Aluminum Foil Roaster to put in our tiny oven. Believe it or not, I could not find this size anywhere else. They carry Costco products. If you do not have time to go all the way to Costco, but want to buy things like Pasta sauce, tuna in water, you can find them here. The whole third floor is wine store. Free Delivery service to certain area with a purchase over ¥10,000.
Update: The Early Bird Special Sale has been discontinued.

Hanamasa is a wholesale supermarket started as a butcher in 1923 and expanded to over 60 stores in the Kanto area. This store reminds me of Trader Joe’s for some reason, although, two are quite different. One thing in common, they are both cheap. The other thing is both has a lot of frozen food and cheap wine. [...] had to go out and run some errands, so as long as I was in the neighborhood I decided to go back to Nissin Delicatessen for supplies. I knew I wanted some fennel to roast with other vegetables–the season demanded [...]
