I wish I could say that I had made this exquisite yōkan or jellied sweet that captured the underwater world so perfectly–fish are swimming through clear water over a mossy green riverbed paved with pebbles. This was a creation of students in the wagashi or Japanese sweets cooking class that meets next door to my kaiseki class.
You know what I am thinking…

If you’re thinking what I think you are thinking, then Te-chan is liable to get even fatter than he is now…
But, that picture is terrific! I love how you get the profile through one facet and the view down to the river bottom through the other. Perfect.
I just wish I could get a sense of the scale. Is that cube 3cm a side? Or, is it bigger? More like 5cm?

I could not get a good picture from the top, but it was really like looking in the river in this little cube, more like 5 cm.

That’s too cool! Though I, too, am curious about the size of the thing…
I’d love to learn to make wagashi, but really don’t think I have the patience. Probably better just to stick to eating them instead.

Hi Skye, Thanks for stopping by. These students made 2 kinds of wagashi in one hour - I suppose it’s not too bad. But, of course, your strategy to stick to eating always works, right?
