Yamaso-Oyster Wholesaler at Ota Shijo

So, where to buy raw oysters year-round in Tokyo? When the great oyster bar bargains are over, and if you can shuck your own oysters, Yamaso is the place.

This oyster wholesaler sits right in the Suisan-to, or the warehouse like building for handling the marine products, at the Ota Shijo. They specialize in imported oysters, which I believe are air-shipped from North America. The storefront is small and looks as if the tanks they keep oysters in occupy most of the space. In those tanks, they have a purification system pumping water 24 hours a day and so making raw oysters available all year round.

It’s been a while since I went there and I believe I payed around 300 yen per piece depends on the variety. But, please call to check the price and hours before you pack your cooler with ice. Their web site says “We do speak American English, so if you prefer to use English, please do so.” Sounds like their son is back from the US. I have to go back and see if the nice lady who gave me daikon with oysters last time is still there.
